SOLD can she ever be free

“SOLD can she ever be free

I pass by the mirror.

The face that looks back is that of a corpse.

Her eyes are empty. She is old and tired. Old and angry. Old and sad. Old, old, a hundred years old

“My name is lakshmi.”  I tell her, “I am from Nepal. I am 13 years old.”

A simple and innocence girl who is poor; lakshmi, still has pleasure in her life but the situation and needs of life  makes her to follow unknown auntie and getting unconsciously attached with the word with uncle husband to the city with the hope of stable and good life. She got to know that she has been sold into the “Happiness House” where the dead like people came for restlessness night. Where the evening time is not filled with joy and excitement but it is simply the path to define the word.

She struggle physically and mentally to survive in Happiness house where Mumtaz give her a wild punishment for not obeying, trapped in that house, life becomes nightmare from which she cannot escape. Mumtaz cheated lakshmi from her earning meager so that she can never leave. Far from home town and loving mother that which she never think can do that, making friends with other girls who are like her in that scary house make her feel relief little bit from the lack of nearer ones.

Then the day comes when she must make a decision- will she risk everything for a chance to become free from that half desert and reclaim her life or staying there?

The whole novel is unimaginative reality and surrounded with the main character lakshmi. Story is easily prescribed in simple plot with easily understandable aspect with deep story and reality by Patricia McCormick.

Writer describe the darkness part of the girls from rural society where girls are to be meant for material benefits. And shows how innocent girls are sold to the red light area of India, the way they are struggling for life and to become free. The title “SOLD can she ever be free” itself has a deep meaning and a main theme. We can assume that novel is related with the “SOLD OF SHE”, what She has to do because of “SOLD” and things did to be free.
